Retail Skills for Young Adults with Disabilities
Retail Skills for Young Adults with Disabilities is a program for young adults age 18-35 who are interested in working at one of our employer partners (Price Chopper, CVS, Shaw's) or in a similar grocery or retail environment.
We accept any Massachusetts resident who identifies as having a disability. You must be interested and able to work independently in a competitive environment after completion of the program.
Overcoming Employment Barriers
When the Polus Center for Social & Economic Development, got the word in January 2020 that they had received a Young Adults with Disabilities Employment grant to offer CVS Pharmacy Technician training — they got busy recruiting 15 young adults (age 18-35) to participate. Polus, a Massachusetts non-profit agency that promotes employment opportunities for people with disabilities, is collaborating on the project with longtime partners Commonwealth Corporation, MassHire North Central MA Workforce Board, and the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission.

Construction is nearing completion on a specialty coffee facility in Africa that is expected to infuse vital new economic opportunities around one of the world’s most coveted agricultural commodities, while potentially being replicated in other coffee-producing parts of the world.
Boat Building in the DRC
Polus has provided materials for a boat to be built by and used within the community to transport people, and deliver goods and services. As of January 2020, the first boat has been built, and we are preparing for a second boat to be built.

Over the past month and a half, I have begun to dig deeper into some possible career industries that I have an interest in exploring, in an effort to find information to help myself decide what I would like to pursue, but more importantly, to spread the knowledge I have gained to anyone looking into these career industries as well. The three industries I have explored are healthcare, fire service, and elementary education.

Polus Center is one of the vendors funded by the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind to provide Pre-Employment Transition Service (Pre-ETS) services to schools or families at no cost. These services address five key areas:
Expressive Arts for Syrian Refugee Children
Wings of Peace provides refugees living in Jordan with physical and psychological rehabilitation services. Wings of Peace began in 2015 in response to the Syrian civil war that forced thousands of Syrians to flee their homes and seek refuge in Jordan and throughout the world. Many of these refugees are children and have been injured and traumatized by the violence. Together, the Polus Center and Asia Development Training developed a unique and effective child trauma support program to address psychological trauma experienced by war-wounded Syrian children.
